Great East Japan (Tohoku) Earthquake and Tsunami Reconnaissance Trip

Reid Middleton Chairman of the Board and Principal, David Swanson, is leading a team of engineers and researchers to Japan from May 27th to June 6th to research the Great East Japan (Tohoku) Earthquake and Tsunami. The 10-member SEAW reconnaissance team travelled to the Sendai region of Japan to investigate and the earthquake and tsunami damage and to learn lessons for the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Hosted by the Miyagi Prefecture, the SEAW reconnaissance team was one of very few government hosted US-based research teams to investigate the earthquake and tsunami affected regions. The M9.0 Great East Japan (Tohoku) Earthquake and Tsunami is very similar to an expected earthquake and tsunami off the coast of the Pacific Northwest on the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The SEAW reconnaissance team plans to bring back lessons learned for architects, engineers, and public officials in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.
