Bachelor’s Quarters were designed and built within 20 months – in time for sailors arriving home.
A Home Away From Sea
New dorm for sailors provides a home on land.
A sailor’s respite. The U.S. Navy needed a new structure to house sailors when not at sea. Reid Middleton provided structural and civil design services for the eight-story Bachelors Enlisted Quarters (BEQ) facility made of reinforced concrete shear walls and post-tensioned concrete slabs. The 200-unit BEQ was designed to have a similar feel and appearance to dormitories and private student apartments that the sailor’s peers would experience in a university setting. Retaining wall, extensive trails and walkways, water, sewer and stormwater utilities, and a stormwater treatment/detention pond were designed. The facility is LEED® Gold certified for sustainability elements.
