  • Looking Like a Good Neighbor

City zoning variance dictated that the jail should not look like a jail.

Building the Big House, part of a three-block campus redevelopment, Snohomish County needed a new detention facility in the urban civic center of downtown Everett. Coordinating work with the other projects on campus and maintaining utility services during construction, Reid Middleton provided site civil, grading, drainage, erosion control, sanitary sewer main and service, water main and service, street improvements, construction cost estimating, and bid and construction phase services. While meeting an accelerated schedule, and conforming to tight sight constraints on a downtown block, utility services were maintained during construction, including the relocation of an existing sewer main while maintaining service to the remainder of the campus. The detention facility is now interconnected with the county courthouse via a transportation tunnel and part of an entire campus redevelopment that consolidates county employees to one location and creates a new civic space and public amenity.
