Grading the Road for A+ Sight
The road was graded to improve centerline vision for increased safety.
“Bicycle Capital of the Northwest,” Redmond, Washington, is a community that loves the outdoors. Creating a safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing roadway and multiuse path fits their transportation design ethic. For the NE 116th Street improvement project that runs through a rugged area of Redmond and draws a variety of pedestrian traffic, bicyclists, drivers, and even an occasional horse rider on their way to school, work, play, and home, it was especially true.
To increase safety for all users, Reid Middleton designed improvements that included the addition of a two-way left turn lane, adjustment of the centerline profile to be compliant with sight distance requirements, and addition of a four-leg, single-lane roundabout. Incorporating the new roundabout into the City’s proposed profile proved challenging, as the grades at this intersection reached 8% in some places. The entire design complemented the installation of a nearby fish passage culvert.
