A busy intersection needed improvement to accommodate both automobile and train traffic.

Back on track. With the upgraded BNSF railroad crossing coming online, Whatcom County needed to improve the safety and efficiency of the adjacent skewed intersection and traffic signal. A key component was interconnecting the timing of the traffic signal and the rail crossing which required coordination among multiple agencies. Reid Middleton provided design for a new traffic signal and reconstructed the roadway and intersection to accommodate better traffic flow and provide a safe multimodal environment for pedestrians and bicycles. For this federally-funded project, the intersection improvements were designed in accordance with county standards and the traffic signal was designed to WSDOT standards.  As a cost-savings and sustainable practice, the existing asphalt roadway was demolished and used as sub-base material for the new roadway.
