The Seattle Maritime Academy, located in Seattle along the north side of the Ballard Ship Canal, is one of the only academies of its kind. Aging timber bulkheads and piers on the campus required renovation, necessitating design and an environmental evaluation.
Reid Middleton was hired to design the bulkhead and pier replacements and to complete all environmental documentation, including JARPA, SEPA, and SSDP permits. We reviewed a number of design alternatives and evaluated each for their environmental implications, helping Seattle Central Community College to determine the best option for site improvements. Reid Middleton performed full design and construction administration for the new bulkhead wall, replacement piers, unfit soil removal and replacement, site grading, pavement, fencing, and upgraded potable water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage utilities. Other project elements included updated electrical utilities and landscaping.
Keeping all involved parties informed and involved required our coordination on a number of meetings with the Army Corps of Engineers, WDFW, DOE, the National Marine Fisheries Service, and the City of Seattle. Our breadth of experience with SEPA documentation and environmental permitting enabled us to ensure that, on behalf of the lead agency, environmental permitting and documentation requirements were met according to agency requirements.
