Samsung Heavy Industry Floating Storage Facility

Goeje Island, South Korea

Piling

Samsung Heavy Industry requested design, education of staff, and construction administration services to build a large floating concrete facility adjacent to their major dry dock. The floating facility is used as a parking lot during ship building period and for temporary ship-building equipment storage area during ship launching. The objectives were to save expensive limited upland space and maximize the ship building efficiency. Design services included civil, structural, marine, geotechnical and electrical engineering. Samsung requested training services for their construction managers and engineers regarding construction techniques and procedures for VLFS (very large floating structures).

Reid Middleton provided design and construction administration services for the construction of the new floating storage facility at Samsung Heavy Industry Shipyard, Goeje Island, South Korea. The concrete float, measuring 164 ft x 98 ft x 33 ft. Creation of a floating storage facility improved ship building efficiency, which saved transfer time related to moving the heavy equipment between the dry dock and upland storage area. The floating storage facility also conserved the expensive upland space. Reid Middleton created an innovative module connection procedure, allowing for construction in the seawater.
