Reid Middleton served as prime engineering firm for a major new marine terminal facility in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, to be used by the commercial fishing industry. This project involves construction of a new 1,000-foot wharf structure to replace a World War II-vintage wharf, a new 140,000-square-foot cold storage and marine transshipment building, road realignment, quarry development, and utility systems. The new wharf is constructed using open cell steel sheet piling and fill extracted from a new adjacent quarry. The facility is designed to withstand the extreme environment of the Aleutian Islands, including Zone 4 seismic accelerations and 130 mph winds. It has a construction value of more than $60 million.

Reid Middleton provided preliminary design alternatives, cost analysis, environmental analysis and documentation, secured all permits, managed the design work of a multi-discipline design team, performed final design for the building structure, and provided construction administration. The project was constructed on an accelerated schedule that required close communication and coordination between the design team, contractor, and owner.
