My first introduction to roundabouts came while I was studying abroad in Cape Town, South Africa. Actually, the intersection I drove through wasn’t a roundabout at all, but rather a huge traffic circle with stop lights at the entries to each of the five multi-lane legs. This intersection, which locals referred to as a roundabout, did not impress me. I wondered why any engineer would tangle up an intersection with a roundabout like this one. Surely there was a better way. A few years later, I came to work for Reid Middleton and learned that there was, indeed, a better way. Roundabouts don’t have to be a headache. In fact, when designed well they can actually untangle traffic confusion. Roundabouts are safe, efficient, environmentally-friendly, and attractive. Over the last few years I have learned a lot about roundabout design from leaders in the field, who also happen to work in my office. I am proud to be a part of a skilled team that strives to make every roundabout a success. |
