TRB International Roundabout Conference 2011
The Transportation Research Board 3rd International Roundabout Conference was held on May 17-20, 2011 in Carmel, Indiana. Reid Middleton sent four people to the conference and was an active participant. One day before the conference began Patrick McGrady was one of three people invited by SIDRA Solutions to give a case study of the East Lake Sammamish Parkway/SE 43rd Way roundabout that opened in 2009. Both Kelli Owen and Rachel Price gave presentations at the conference. Kelli's presentation explained the challenges and solutions with accommodating a 112-foot, 12-Axle Lowboy truck as a design vehicle in three roundabouts that were under construction in Snohomish County, Washington. Rachel's presentation entitled, "Does Your Roundabout Waltz?" explained how creating a natural drive path is a critical element often overlooked in roundabout design. Reid Middleton, in conjunction with Phil Rust from Ada County Highway District, Idaho, gave a poster presentation entitled "Preventing Path Overlap by Design". This presentation investigated and evaluated design methods to minimize the risk of path overlap in multi-lane roundabouts. The conference social event on Thursday night was a trip to the nearby Indianapolis Motor Speedway where everyone could watch practice sessions, visit the garages and the museum, and enjoy dinner at a reserved suite located in the infield.
