Bringing the outdoors in. “Cabela’s loves Alaska,” Communications Specialist Wes Remmer explained when asked why Cabela’s, Inc. intended to expand into the state. They were shocked, however, to discover that their proto-typical facility design successfully replicated 36 times would not work here:  it could not withstand the wind, seismic, and snow loads in Alaska.  Reid Middleton stepped in to adapt Cabela’s facility to meet Alaskan structural standards and needs.  Upgrades to the typical store included a steel framed roof, CMU bearing/shear walls, and reconfigured exterior canopies.  Improvements to Cabela’s signature timber truss main corridor were required to successfully suspend Alaskan bush planes and beluga whales from the ceiling.  The warehouse area was significantly increased to circumvent lengthy Alaskan delivery times and house a larger volume of reserve merchandise.  The finished project included a recreational vehicle parking area for up to six RVs with picnic tables and a dump station.  The store maintained the open showroom, museum-like environment typical of Cabela’s while it uniquely showcased Alaska.  Everything displayed – the fish in the 5,575 gallon aquarium, hand-painted murals, artifacts, and over 300 trophy animal mounts – was designed to communicate the magnificence and diversity of the outdoor Alaskan experience.
