Naval Avionics Calibration Laboratory Relocation (Bldg 2547) & New Security Building Conversion (B994)

The Naval Avionics Calibration Laboratory at the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI) was relocated from its current location in Building 994 and consolidated into a new location in Building 2547. The laboratory serves the Navy operations across the entire Pacific rim, and has a very high-profile within Naval Aviation. The move required modifications to Bldg 2547.

A key modification was the construction of a pile-supported isolated foundation to support a Schwien manometer, a critical vibration sensitive instrument essential to the lab's work. The second half of the project includes seismic upgrading and renovation of Building 994 to house the relocated Naval Security Building. Because the building houses the NASWI Security forces, it provides a variety of secure and specialized spaces for training, equipment storage, and performance of their duties.

A full seismic upgrade of the 1960's era masonry and steel joist building was performed to achieve immediate occupancy performance level, the highest level of structural performance defined by the seismic design standards. The upgrade included a unique modification of the roof framing to construct a steel braced frame diapragm, avoiding a more costly reconstruction of the roof.
