A seismic evaluation and upgrades program for the nine-story, 250,000 square-foot, Main Hospital was led by Reid Middleton. State-of-the-art advanced 3D non-linear finite element analyses techniques were utilized in the design of seismic upgrades to the 35 year old hospital. 88 fluid viscous dampers were installed at 44 locations in the building to dampen seismic movement. The award-winning project was designed to an Immediate Occupancy (IO) structural performance level at a cost of approximately $20 per square foot. An innovative post-disaster Rapid Evaluation and Assessment Program (REAP) with a state-of-the-art 12 channel real-time seismic monitoring system was deployed in the structure.
