Renovation of Former API Hospital for New Providence Alaska Medical Center Administration Building
Anchorage, AK
For the seismic upgrade associated with the complete renovation of the old API Hospital into a new administration facility for Providence Hospital, Reid Middleton provided structural engineering to bring the building up to the most current level of seismic safety without requiring significant demolition. The existing concrete shear walls were wrapped with composite fibers to increase shear and overturning capacity without increasing wall width and the associated loss of floor space. A new entry space and additional penthouse space were added along with self-supporting wing-like canopies at each of the three entrances. This renovation allowed for four specific client goals to all be achieved in one building; to make use of an existing derelict facility; to provide new office space near the existing Providence Alaska campus; to provide Class A office space that was up to current code levels of safety and performance; and to achieve all of these goals while maintaining a cost below $200 per square-foot.
