Washington School Information Processing Cooperative Expansion
Everett, WA
A two-story, 3,600 square-foot expansion for the existing 31,000 square-foot Washington School Information Processing Cooperation (WSIPC) building in Everett, Washington was designed by Reid Middleton. The facility serves as an information processing and training center. The existing structure, built in 1981, utilizes a steel-frame with timber floors. A CMU shear wall is provided along the rear face of the building. Framing of the addition matches the existing to the extent possible under current building codes, with new moment frame provided in each direction. The addition is tied into the existing structure at each frame. Although no seismic upgrades to the existing structure were performed, ties to the existing structure were designed to ensure that a portion of the existing structure's seismic load will be resisted by the new structure. This satisfied the building code with regard to building expansions while providing the owner with a higher level of reliability.
